Ampara School

Based in the East of the country and affected by the tsunami and the ongoing conflict, this mainly Muslim school has almost 200 children who need the very basics to help their learning. So far, we have built a well, toilets for the children, bought shoes for bare feet and provided books. A daily meal is also provided. The school needs to ensure that the children continue to receive at least one nutritious meal a day, it also needs more books and a solar electricity supply.

Sudhuwathura Ora School-Monaragala

This school has nearly 120 children and is based in a jungle village of Sri Lanka. Previously, only 30 children had desks. Now, we have ensured that every child has one. We also supply the essential daily meal for the children. In addition we have built a well, provided books, shoes and a computer. The school needs money to continue providing the daily meal and to add to its basic educational materials.

Tangalle School

Based in the South of the island, this school was devastated by the Tsunami. The children from the impoverished fishing families are now in a new school but still need basic school supplies and a decent daily meal to continue their education.

Seeduwa

Based near the International Airport, this after school club caters for about 35 children. Again, the children are given a daily nutritious meal and are provided with a range of activities, including English, music, dancing, singing and badminton sessions. The mothers have learned to sew and the provision of a machine ensures they earn a small amount of money by sewing items for sale. Some children have successfully won scholarships to slightly better schools and are provided with their bus fare to enable them to attend. Small sums go a long way in this society.

Moratuwa

The after-school club in this school provides support for over 200 children who are from fishing families and were affected by the Tsunami. The families are so poor that children as young as six are sent to work to earn a few rupees to help the families. Providing them with a meal enables them to attend the club. The club provides the children with basic skills such as sewing, woodworking and iron-work. They also learn to play musical instruments, to dance and sing and to speak English. Their mothers are also trained in skills which enable them to earn a living by producing items for sale. Materials are provided.
